Thought you may be interested in seeing how I go about those Sktchy drawings.
Selected my image:
Firstly I draw a rough outline of a face, this is basically an egg shape
(using a basic cheap graphite pencil to start with)
I think about the angle of the head, so for this I angled it to the left.
Then I Shape the chin for the individual - basically faces are either
heart shaped, square or round
🖤 ⬛️ ⚫️
Next I marked where the mouth would go > bottom of the nose > then the eyes
You can see that the features (eyes, nose, mouth) only take up the bottom
Half of the head shape
Starting with the mouth I put in the lips,
and that gave me a line up to the left eye (as we view this),
that in turn enabled me to place the right eye
Having placed the features of the face,
I then added the hair.
You'll see I put a straight line down on the left hand side,
(take a look at the reference photo, only part of the head is visible)
Happy with this so far
I continued with my Lyra 9B water soluble graphite pencil
and added the darkest areas around the hair > shadows on face >
All I needed to do was add some clear water to this graphite
and the drawing is done.
Although I erase some of the pencil marks,
I tend to keep a lot of the additional lines
as I think it adds character to the portrait.
